UConn's Bennett to play in Medal of Honor Bowl

We are approaching the season when players start being announced for postseason all-star games.

While I don't anticipate anything close to what happened last year when Sio Moore, Dwayne Gratz, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Ryan Griffin, Nick Williams, Jory Johnson and Trevardo Williams all got play in all-star games, but at least one Husky has been invited to an all-star contest.

Offensive tackle Jimmy Bennett said that he will be playing in the inaugural Medal of Honor Bowl on Jan. 11 in Charleston. S.C.

"I am kind of nervous," Bennett said. "I have never played in an all-star game, I didn’t play in one in high school, even in Pee Wees I didn’t even play in one. I am kind of excited, it is going to be a learning experience just like in college saying ‘these guys are good, everybody is good.’"

Bennett and fellow senior offensive lineman Steve Greene will be training together among a group of 10 pro prospects in a training facility in Pittsburgh hoping to help their draft stock rise.

MILESTONES IN REACH
Geremy Davis has already authored one of the best seasons for a Connecticut receiver. He has a chance to move up on a variety of single-season and career lists at UConn.

With 56 catches, he is currently 15th on UConn's single-season list for receptions. He needs five catches to tie Carl Bond for the No. 10 spot. With 31 receiving yards he will move into a tie for 10th in that department and if he has 122 receiving yards he will become the seventh UConn player with 1,000 receiving yards in a season and first since Bond and John Fitzsimmons accomplished the feat in 1998.

Davis needs 51 yards to break into the top 10 in career receiving yards.

Yawin Smallwood needs 16 tackles to move into the top 10 in that category.

One record I am sure the Huskies are glad is out of reach is the one for most career punts. There was a time when it looked as if Cole Wagner would have a shot at that mark of 322 which was set by Nick Harris of California from 1997-2000. However, Wagner heads into Saturday's game with Memphis with 303 career punts.
