UConn looking for improved play from linebackers

Bob Diaco's public stance following a season-opening 35-10 loss to Brigham Young was mostly positive as he decided the positional groups - with one notable exception.

Diaco, a former linebacker, said that the LBs "performed at a below average to poor level."

He did not limit his critique to his dealings with the media as he said the same thing to the linebackers.

Heading into today's Stony Brook game, they are determined to make amends.

"As a group we are looking to come out and have a little bit of redemption for ourselves," Graham Stewart said, "You kind of take it as a shot to your pride when your coaches said you didn't play well,"

PLENTY OF RECRUITS IN ACTION LAST NIGHT
By my count five UConn commits had games last night.

The highlights came from Connor Freeborn who had an interception in Salesianum's 28-7 win over Caesar Rodney. Also, Frank Battle, the most recent player to commit, had four catches for 24 yards including a 12-yard touchdown as Miami's Belen Jesuit lost to 27-7 to Columbus

I haven't seen any individual stats for the other three but Ian Campbell's Pequannock (N.J.) High team opened the season with a 19-0 win over Montville, Chris Lee's Severna Park (Md.) team lost 46-0 to Arundel and Kevin Murphy's West Chester (Pa.) East team defeated Kennett 35-13.

PHILLIPS DELIVERS FOR BC
Former UConn receiver Shakim Phillips played but did not record a catch in Boston College's season-opening win over UMass but he was significantly more involved in last night's loss to Pittsburgh as Phillips caught four passes for 78 yards including a 48-yard touchdown pass.

Here's what he had to say after the game courtesy of the BC official site

"Afterwards, I realized I’ve got to be better (after a first-quarter drop). That’s what we’ve worked on for a long time. It’s not all on Tyler, we need to help him out. We need to catch the ball better and that’s it."

Ty-Meer Brown also got into the game and had one solo tackle.
