UConn's Casey Cochran won't play against Stony Brook
Starting quarterback Casey Cochran suffered an upper-body injury in the season-opening loss to Brigham Young and on his weekly radio show UConn football coach Bob Diaco said Cochran will not be medically cleared to play against Stony Brook on Saturday.
Chandler Whitmer, who started 16 straight games in the 2012 and 2013 seasons, will get the start. Diaco said he would not hesitate to use Tim Boyle, who was being primed to use this season as a developmental year and be redshirted if at all possible, would be in line for plays on Saturday if something happens to Whitmer.
Whitmer played between 40-45 percent of the offensive snaps in the two-quarterback system UConn utilized against BYU and he was 8 of 17 for 113 yards in the 35-10 loss.
UConn will have the services of two scholarship quarterbacks since Bryant Shirreffs has to sit out this season after transferring from North Carolina State per NCAA rules on transfers. The only other quarterback on the roster is walk-on Will Rishell but at the practices I was able to attend in during preseason camp, I didn't even see him working with the other quarterbacks.
