UConn's coaching staff coming together
Little by little the names of the coaches hired by Bob Diaco are starting to emerge.
The latest one is former Richmond interim head coach Wayne Lineburg. Lineburg and Diaco were assistants together on the Virginia staff in 2007 and 2008.
Lineburg was the interim coach for the Spiders during the 2011 season and won his first three games before Richmond ended the season with eight losses in a row. There have been tweets from Lineburg's former players and even his brother who tweeted that he would be coaching special teams. I'd expect UConn to start making official announcements on the coaching staff in the coming day.
Familiarity is a constant theme with the reported new hires by Diaco as Ernest Jones and Josh Reardon, who www.footballscoop.com said will coach running backs and defensive backs respectively as UConn, worked with Diaco at Notre Dame. Mike Cummings, who according to multiple reports will be the offensive coordinator, worked with Diaco on the Eastern Michigan staff in 2001 and at Western Michigan in 2004.
The lone holdover among the assistant coaches is Mike Foley, who coached tight ends last season and added the offensive line duties after Paul Pasqualoni and George DeLeone were fired.
The only coach from last year's staff that I've heard of landing elsewhere is Kermit Buggs, who according to the www.coachingsearch.com site is joining the staff at James Madison.
There has been reports of some changes on Randy Edsall's coaching staff at Maryland and I wonder if Edsall would reach out to some of the people he worked with at UConn like Hank Hughes. Also, Lovie Smith hired Shane Day to coach quarterbacks with the Chicago Bears and I wonder that now that Smith is the head coach in Tampa Bay whether Day is a person he would consider adding to his staff.
