UConn commit a Walter Camp player of year finalist

The Walter Camp Foundation released its All-Connecticut team and finalists for state high school player of the year and to the shock of nobody, record-breaking UConn commit Arkeel Newsome made both lists.

Newsome, Yale-bound Stephen Barmore ( a quarterback at Southington), West Haven running back and Syracuse commit Ervin Phillips and Middletown quarterback (and Gatorade State Player of the Year) Dario Highsmith are finalists for the player of the year award which will be announced on Jan. 11.

Newsome ran 333 times for a state record 3,867 yards and 64 touchdowns in 15 games for Class S champion Ansonia. Newsome finished his career with state records for 10,685 rushing yards, 172 rushing touchdowns and 187 total touchdowns.
