Another record for UConn commit

Before he arrives at UConn, Ansonia High senior running back Arkeel Newsome could own pretty much every state rushing and scoring mark.

One of the big ones came in last night's season opener as Newsome broke former Ansonia High Alex Thomas' state scoring record with his three touchdown runs in a 52-7 win over Torrington. Newsome came into the game with 740 career points and had TD runs of 1, 24 and 25 yards in the first quarter. Newsome finished with 181 yards on 10 carries.

Just one town over fellow UConn commit Logan Marchi was putting on a show in a wild game between his St. Paul squad and host Derby.

Marchi threw for 378 yards, three touchdowns, one interceptions and nearly 50 yards rushing. However, it wasn't enough as Derby rallied for a 49-45 victory.

They weren't the only UConn commits having big nights on Friday.

Tom Rodrick had nine tackles, two sacks, a pair of fumble recoveries,a 14-yard touchdown run and 15-yard reception to set up the first score in Leicester (Mass.) High's 20-0 win over Millbury

Justin Noye finished with 137 rushing yards including a pair of TD runs to lead his Rochester (N.Y.) East High team to a 14-9 win over McQuaid.

Luke Carrezola had four tackles for loss and a sack in Neshimany's 28-0 win over Souderton.

Alec Bloom's only catch was an athletic, leaping 9-yard TD score to lead his Ligonier Valley team to a 21-17 win over Blairsville.
